Toyota will be relocating to its new headquarters by the 2030 fiscal year.
The new base occupies a prime site in front of Shinagawa Station, one of Japan’s busiest transport hubs.
Toyota said the evelopment of the new building would begin at the end of this month in partnership with Keikyu Corporation.
The move forms part of Toyota’s wider shift from carmaker to “mobility company” as it seeks to achieve carbon neutrality and broaden the appeal and usefulness of mobility.
The new head office would be designed to foster collaboration, it added.
Inside, the building would prioritise engineers. Dedicated areas will support software, artificial intelligence and other digital development. There will also be zones where staff can work beside real vehicles. The layout encourages open dialogue across hierarchies and disciplines.
Well-being features would also be integral. Toyota plans to include its “Genki-Kûkan” scheme, which uses plants to improve air quality and mental health. Research into leaf-shape sightlines and microscopic forest air agents are among some of the elements to be included.
A ceremonial groundbreaking took place on May 23.
Toyota president Koji Sato said the new office would be a focal point to harness diverse talent and accelerate creative mobility solutions.
