Stellantis N.V. has unveiled its first in-house developed automated driving system, STLA AutoDrive 1.0, in Amsterdam.

The system delivers hands-free and eyes-off functionality at SAE Level 3 and forms a core pillar of Stellantis’ technology strategy alongside STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit.

Designed to enhance vehicle intelligence, automation, and user experience, STLA AutoDrive enables automated driving at speeds up to 60kph, significantly reducing driver workload in stop-and-go traffic and allowing drivers to engage in non-driving activities.

Ideal for urban commuters, the system notifies drivers when conditions are appropriate for activation.

Once a physical button is pressed, STLA AutoDrive takes control, maintaining safe distances, adjusting speed, and managing steering and braking in line with traffic flow. This hands-free capability permits drivers to undertake activities such as reading, watching films, or catching up on emails, thereby reclaiming valuable time.

Stellantis chief engineering and technology officer Ned Curic said the system is intended to make time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable by handling routine driving tasks.

“Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority,” he said. Engineers have refined STLA AutoDrive to react swiftly and naturally, ensuring a smooth, predictable performance that closely mirrors human driving behaviour.

The system continuously monitors its surroundings using an advanced suite of sensors to maintain high-precision awareness, even in challenging conditions such as light rain or road spray. An automated sensor-cleaning system further supports optimal functionality.

At higher speeds, STLA AutoDrive expands its capabilities by offering Adaptive Cruise Control and lane-centring functions in Level 2 and Level 2+ modes.

Built on a scalable architecture, the system is ready for global deployment across Stellantis branded vehicles and is cloud-connected, enabling continuous enhancements through over-the-air updates and real-time data integration.

It complies with applicable regulations in supported markets and requires drivers to remain alert, seated, and prepared to take control when necessary.

Future developments for STLA AutoDrive include extending hands-free and eyes-off operation to speeds up to 95kph and incorporating enhanced off-road automation for select models.
