Mercedes-Benz has started series production of the new GLA at its Rastatt plant in Germany, with the fully electric versions first off the line.
Production of the battery-electric GLA is already under way, while 48-volt hybrid versions will follow later this year.
Mercedes-Benz said the plant can build electric, hybrid and conventional combustion models on the same production line, allowing output to be adjusted as demand changes.
The new GLA is currently assembled in Hall 4.0. Mercedes-Benz is also converting neighbouring Hall 4.1, which is due to take over production of the model from 2027. Digital twins are being used to simulate and optimise the new line before physical work is completed.
The factory also uses artificial intelligence within Mercedes-Benz’s MO360 production ecosystem, alongside MB.OS and digital production tools. Mercedes-Benz said the combination is intended to improve flexibility and production efficiency.
Software loading has also changed. Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS, sends vehicle software through a central server in the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud rather than relying on separate hardware modules. Mercedes-Benz says this means cars can leave the factory with the latest available software installed.
The electric GLA draws on several German plants for major components. Electric drive units and axles come from Untertürkheim and its Mettingen and Hedelfingen sites, while high-voltage batteries are supplied by Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Accumotive in Kamenz, Saxony. Body and structural components come from nearby Kuppenheim.
Rastatt has produced Mercedes-Benz vehicles since 1992 and employs about 7,000 people.
The new GLA adopts a lower body, longer wheelbase and redesigned cabin with a panoramic roof and MBUX Superscreen. Its infotainment system includes the MBUX Virtual Assistant with generative artificial intelligence.
