Volvo is making public charging less fiddly for its newest electric SUVs in the US.
The company has introduced Plug & Charge for the EX90, with the same feature to follow on the EX60 when US deliveries begin later this year.
At a compatible public charger, it works almost like home charging: plug in, walk away, and the car handles the payment side.
No app opening. No card swipe. No manual start from the charger screen.
Once the service is activated, the vehicle and charging network deal with authentication and payment automatically.
For drivers used to juggling apps, accounts and payment cards at different charging networks, that is the hassle Volvo wants to remove.
The rollout covers participating charging networks in the US, including Tesla Superchargers and IONNA locations.
Volvo said EX90 and future EX60 drivers will have access to more than 35,000 compatible charging stations, with additional charging partners to be added later.
Drivers can find supported chargers through the car’s built-in Google Automotive System or the Volvo Cars app.
Volvo’s wider public charging service gives access to more than 120,000 charging points across North America, although Plug & Charge itself is limited to selected models and compatible DC fast chargers.
There is one important note for early EX90 owners. Volvo said 2025 EX90 vehicles need the new NVIDIA Orin/Orin core computer configuration for Plug & Charge to work.
This is not Volvo’s first move with the feature globally. In January 2025, Volvo said the EX30, EX40 and EC40 in Europe would get Plug & Charge as part of a wider model-year technology update.
