Fang Cheng Bao has launched the Bao 5 YunNian Flash-Charge Edition and Bao 8 Flash-Charge Edition in China with BYD’s most eye-catching chassis trick yet: the YunNian-P Ultra hydraulic body-control system.
The system can lift individual wheels, help change a tyre without a jack, and allow the vehicle to keep moving on three wheels if one wheel is damaged or lifted clear of the ground.
YunNian-P Ultra is billed as BYD’s latest all-scenario intelligent hydraulic body-control system, making its debut on the Bao 5 and Bao 8 Flash-Charge Edition models.
The main claims are a “3-minute tyre change”, three-wheel driving and the ability to raise any corner of the vehicle for recovery work.
Maximum wheel-lift height is 300mm, while a single lift can reportedly be held for more than 24 hours. The system is also rated for a maximum lifting load of 9 tonnes.
The hardware is a clear step up from the earlier Bao 5 set-up.
Autohome said YunNian-P Ultra moves from a single-valve damper arrangement to dual-valve control. It also adds three stiffness settings and road-preview functions.
The Bao 5 gains the most from the change, as earlier versions used a simpler YunNian-P system with two stiffness levels and no preview function.
Fang Cheng Bao launched the two SUVs on May 13.
The Bao 5 YunNian Flash-Charge Edition is priced at 305,800 yuan (RM177,000), with a limited-time price of 299,800 yuan (RM174,000).
The larger Bao 8 Flash-Charge Edition starts at 419,800 yuan (RM243,000), with a limited-time price of 409,800 yuan (RM237,000).
Both models also get BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and flash-charging technology.
Chinese reports said the Bao 5 Flash-Charge Edition has a claimed combined range of 1,310km, while the Bao 8 is rated at 1,380km.
Both use an 800V high-voltage flash-charging platform, with a claimed 10% to 97% charging time of nine minutes under normal temperatures.
The Bao 5 continues with a 1.5-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid system, while the Bao 8 uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid set-up.
The Bao 8 is also fitted with Huawei Qiankun ADS 4.1.5 assisted driving and front and rear lidars, while the Bao 5 uses BYD’s God’s Eye B assisted-driving package.
Outside China, the two SUVs are marketed as the Denza B5 and Denza B8. That is why the update is worth watching for Malaysians, since BYD is trying to grow Denza as a higher-end SUV and MPV brand in this region.
The B8 is due to launch in Malaysia on May 21, adding to the Denza line-up that currently comprises just the D9 MPV.
