MG Motor Malaysia has launched the locally assembled MG S5 EV, with the CKD electric SUV now priced from RM116,900 for the LUX Long Range variant.
The launch follows the first local line-off of the model in Melaka in March, when SAIC Motor Malaysia began production of the S5 EV at the PEPS-JV facility in Alor Gajah, in partnership with EP Manufacturing Berhad.
The Malaysian-assembled version gets stronger output than the earlier imported model, with 151kW and 350Nm sent to the rear wheels.
MG lists the 0-100kph time at 7.0 seconds, which puts it firmly in the brisk family SUV category rather than the merely adequate one.
The S5 EV LUX Long Range uses a 62kWh LFP battery, with a claimed 446km WLTP range. It supports 150kW DC charging, giving a quoted 10% to 80% charge time of about 26 minutes under suitable conditions. AC charging is rated at 7kW.
MG is also using local assembly to add kit. The LUX Long Range comes with leatherette seats, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat and a hands-free powered tailgate.
Safety equipment includes seven airbags and MG’s ADAS 2.5 driver-assistance package, including Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control.
The S5 EV has also received five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and Asean NCAP, according to MG’s Malaysian specification material and local launch coverage.
Warranty coverage is eight years or 180,000km for the battery pack and eight years or 160,000km for the motor control unit. MG is also offering a launch promotion package worth up to RM9,000, subject to terms and conditions.
