JLR creative chief Gerry McGovern will leave at the end of March, ending a 22-year stint that saw him help shape both Jaguar and Land Rover through a huge stretch of change.

Credit to Autocar here, which first reported in December that McGovern had been asked to step down and now said staff were told last Friday that he is leaving to set up his own creative consultancy. JLR confirmed the move to the magazine.

In a memo seen by Autocar, McGovern said it had been a privilege to work at JLR across “two extraordinary decades” and thanked the Tata family for the opportunities given to him.

He also praised the people across the business and said he was looking forward to the next stage of his creative career.

JLR chief executive P.B. Balaji, who became CEO in November 2025, said McGovern’s leadership, vision and drive had left an indelible stamp on the brands.

His fingerprints are all over modern JLR. McGovern played a central role in the reborn Land Rover Defender, helped keep the Range Rover line-up looking like Range Rovers should, and oversaw the Jaguar Type 00 concept as the brand heads towards an electric-only luxury future.

He was also closely tied to JLR’s 2021 Reimagine strategy and remained one of the company’s most influential creative figures.

What comes next for his consultancy is still unclear. For JLR, though, this is a big departure at a time when both Jaguar and Land Rover are already in transition.
