BMW will begin rolling out an upgraded version of BMW Maps in October 2026 that combines navigation, surrounding traffic and driver-assistance information in a single 3D display.

The feature, called BMW Maps with Driver Assistance, will be available on vehicles running BMW Operating System X. It shows the car in its actual lane and at the correct road level while also displaying how the vehicle’s assistance systems interpret the surrounding environment.

BMW said the aim is to make assisted driving easier to understand, particularly on motorways, at junctions and in dense urban traffic.

The new display works with BMW’s latest driver-assistance systems, including Highway Assistant. Where permitted, the system allows hands-free motorway driving at up to 130 kph, controlling steering and speed while supporting automated lane changes after confirmation from the driver through a glance.

When route guidance is active, the system can also use navigation data to support the vehicle from a motorway entry ramp through to the required exit.

BMW plans to take the integration further from 2027. Models equipped with Operating System X are due to begin receiving navigation-guided semi-automated driving in urban areas, starting in Germany.

The mapping system combines vehicle sensor information with navigation data and 3D mapping technology supplied by Mapbox. BMW develops the driver-assistance integration in-house.

According to BMW, bringing navigation and assistance information into the same display should give drivers a clearer picture of what the vehicle is doing and why, rather than presenting route instructions and assisted-driving functions separately.

Availability will vary by market. BMW said the Maps feature requires Highway Assistant or Highway & City Assistant and will initially work only in selected countries, cities and on supported roads.
