GM is adding Google Gemini to millions of connected vehicles, in a software update that gives its in-car assistant a much more conversational brain.
The update will roll out soon in the US to eligible model year 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC vehicles with Google built-in. GM says about four million vehicles are eligible, making this one of the larger in-car Gemini deployments so far.
The feature replaces the current Google Assistant with a more conversational AI assistant. Drivers will be able to ask follow-up questions, request music or podcasts, plan routes, reply to messages, translate texts and search for points of interest without having to use fixed voice commands.
This is not an EV-only update. It covers GM’s wider vehicle base, including petrol, hybrid and electric models where Google built-in is available.
But it still fits an EV and future-tech section because it shows
how car cabins are changing: more software-led, more conversational and increasingly dependent on cloud services, vehicle data and over-the-air updates.
GM also said a more deeply integrated AI assistant, shaped by OnStar data and proprietary vehicle information, is due later this year. That version is expected to answer more vehicle-specific questions, moving the idea beyond entertainment and navigation into something closer to an in-car technical guide.
For now, Gemini is the first step. It will arrive over several months, with availability initially limited to US vehicles.
