BYD’s upmarket Denza division delivered its 300,000th D9 multipurpose vehicle this month, marking the fastest climb to that sales figure for any high-end electrified MPV in China.
The milestone vehicle was handed over during a “Denza Night” event in Beijing.
Since its August 2022 launch, the D9 has captured the top spot in China’s MPV rankings for consecutive years and now commands close to 60 percent of the premium new-energy MPV market, according to company figures.
That dominance comes as China’s overall MPV sector contracts. While total segment sales have declined, the D9 has pulled buyers willing to spend between 339,800 and 526,600 yuan on a domestically produced luxury people mover. More than half select configurations priced above 400,000 yuan.
The seven-seat vehicle offers both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric powertrains. Interior appointments include massage-equipped seating, premium audio systems, and what Denza describes as a lounge-style cabin layout. The 300,000th unit was the PHEV.
BYD now plans European sales for the D9 as part of a broader international push.
The company is also preparing its Denza Z sports car for testing at Germany’s Nürburgring circuit, a move designed to establish performance credentials for the premium sub-brand.
The timeline from launch to 300,000 deliveries represents roughly half the time rival premium MPVs have required to reach similar volume, according to Denza’s sales data.
Whether European buyers will accept a Chinese luxury MPV at premium pricing remains untested.
BYD faces established competition from Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and other legacy automakers already selling in the segment.
In Europe’s premium segment, brand reputation and long-established heritage still carry significant weight, particularly for German marques, even though younger EV buyers are increasingly willing to try newer names like BYD.
