At first glance, the new Kia K4 could be mistaken for a wagon, what with its elongated and far from compact size while riding low.

But Kia calls it a hatchback albeit an oversized one.

The Korean carmaker has just unveiled the new K4 for Europe, positioning the hatchback to straddle the C- and D-segments with a bold “Opposites United” design and an emphasis on space and technology.

The K4 would be built in Mexico for European markets.

Powertrains featured prominently in Kia’s pitch.

Europe would get five options, two of them electrified. The range starts with a 1.0-litre T-GDi petrol (115PS) and six-speed manual, which could also be specified with mild-hybrid assistance and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

A 1.6-litre T-GDi paired with a seven-speed DCT deliverrs 150PS or 180PS depending on specification. A full hybrid is planned to join the line-up in 2026.

“With the K4, we are demonstrating how our models can deliver dynamic design, innovation, and intelligent technology irrespectively of their powertrain,” said Kia Europe’s chief operating officer Sjoerd Knipping.

The K4 aims to win buyers on packaging: at 4,440mm long and 1,850mm wide, it offered rear legroom of 964mm and headroom of 973mm, plus a 438-litre boot.

The exterior showcases a floating roofline that flowed into the hatch, Star Map signature lighting inspired by the EV9 and concealed rear door handles in the C-pillar.

A Sparkling Yellow paint option and a sportier GT-Line package (three-spoke steering wheel, paddle shifters, 17- or 18-inch alloys, gloss-black detailing) broadens its appeal.

Inside, a panoramic display combines a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 5.3-inch climate panel and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Kia’s Connected Car Navigation Cockpit unifies navigation, media and settings, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard and a wireless charger on higher trims.

A Harman Kardon audio system, heated and ventilated front seats and bio-based artificial-leather upholstery targets premium expectations.

Digital Key 2.0 (ultra-wideband) enabled phone-as-key functionality, while Kia Connect supported OTA updates, music streaming, a Wi-Fi hotspot and an AI voice assistant activated by “Hey Kia.”

Safety and driver assistance are comprehensive.

Highlights included Blind-Spot View Monitor and Blind-spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control 2 with emergency stop capability, Highway Driving Assist 2.0 for distance keeping and assisted lane changes, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist.

A Surround View Monitor delivered a 360-degree camera feed, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2 detect vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

“With the K4, we are refreshing our lineup with a model that delivers in every dimension: design, space, technology, and electrified powertrains,” said Kia Europe vice president of product and marketing Pablo Martínez Masip.
