Chinese car makers are placing big bets that luxury electric MPVs will be a hit in Malaysia.

The latest to do so is Xpeng, which launched the X9 today, through its local distributor Bermaz Xpeng Sdn Bhd.

The seven-seater is now available for booking from RM269,888.

The launch marks a significant milestone for Xpeng as it seeks to redefine the MPV segment with advanced technology and versatile design features built on its SEPA 2.0 architecture.

The Xpeng X9 is offered in two main battery configurations.

The Standard Range 2WD Pro variant is powered by an 84.5 kWh LFP battery that delivers a range of up to 500 km, while the Long Range variants employ a larger 101.5 kWh NMC battery to extend the range to 590 km.

Both powertrains generate 315 hp and 450 Nm of torque. The vehicle’s 800V high-voltage silicon carbide platform supports ultra-fast DC charging of up to 317 kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. This rapid charging capability is a key selling point, reinforcing Xpeng’s commitment to cutting-edge battery technology and energy optimisation.

The design of the X9 is both futuristic and practical. The exterior features a sleek, streamlined silhouette with flowing lines and a distinctive “Starship” frame, which sets a bold statement of modern elegance and innovation.

Xpeng’s signature “Robot Face” front fascia is accentuated by a seamless horizontal daytime running light that visually widens the vehicle’s stance. A crystal grille with a layered design, complemented by an Active Grille Shutter (AGS) system, improves aerodynamics and efficiency.

Additional exterior design elements include a sharply angled A-pillar, a floating roof and expansive side windows, as well as a 23° coupé-style rear windshield paired with a continuous tail light bar for enhanced visibility.

Inside, the X9 delivers a premium cabin experience that blends luxury with advanced technology.

The interior, inspired by a starship cockpit, features an all-in-one centre console crafted with high-quality materials such as wood veneer and aluminium air vents.

A large 21.4-inch entertainment screen sits at the heart of the dashboard, while customisable ambient lighting creates a refined atmosphere.

The cabin can be transformed at the touch of a button; electrically folding third-row seats convert the configuration from a spacious seven-seater to an ultra-spacious four-seater SUV, expanding the boot capacity from 755 litres to 2,554 litres.

This versatility is designed to accommodate a range of needs from family travel to the transportation of bulky items. Ergonomic Zero Gravity seats, an electric third-row adjustment system and a built-in massage function further enhance comfort, and the inclusion of a smart refrigerator adds an extra layer of convenience for long journeys.

The X9 also focuses on superior handling and manoeuvrability. It is equipped with a world-first active rear-wheel steering system coupled with an intelligent dual-chamber air suspension, achieving an impressive 5.4-metre turning diameter.

This allows the vehicle to negotiate tight parking spaces and narrow roads with ease, while the suspension system automatically adjusts spring stiffness in response to road conditions, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride.

The vehicle incorporates the XPILOT 2.5 advanced driver assistance system, which integrates a comprehensive suite of safety features. Standard equipment includes six airbags and an electronic child lock.

The advanced safety system utilises high-definition radar, ultrasonic sensors and a 360° HD camera powered by the Nvidia Orin-X chipset, supporting functions such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Centring Control, Adaptive Turning Cruise, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist and Active Lane Change.

Additional parking aids such as Enhanced Auto Parking Assist, Auto Exit Parking Assist and Straight Summon are accessible via the Xpeng mobile app. Safety features also encompass Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind-Spot Detection, Lane Keeping Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

Fully imported from China, the X9 is available in three exterior colours – Nebula White, Crescent Silver and Dark Night Black – and offers two interior colour options: Starry Night Black and Moon Shadow Brown.

The model is further supported by a 5-year manufacturer warranty (or 120,000 km, whichever comes first), 5 years of free service and maintenance (or 100,000 km, whichever comes first), and an 8-year high-voltage battery pack warranty with a 160,000 km mileage limit.
