Volkswagen has introduced the ID. EVERY1 concept car as its entry-level electric vehicle designed specifically for the European market.

Targeted for production in 2027 with a starting price of around €20,000, the new model forms part of Volkswagen’s Electric Urban Car Family, which aims to deliver smart, flexible and affordable mobility.

The ID. EVERY1 is built on Volkswagen’s new modular electric drive (MEB) platform with front-wheel drive – a foundation that underpins the brand’s commitment to offering a broad range of powertrains, including efficient combustion engines and advanced hybrids alongside future-oriented electric models.

The concept car builds on the heritage of accessible mobility that began with the Beetle, while also incorporating modern digital features and a powerful software architecture that will allow lifelong updates and personalisation.

Measuring 3,880mm in length and 1,816mm in width, the ID. EVERY1 offers more interior space than its predecessor, the up!, yet retains a compact footprint ideal for urban environments.

Its design features include distinctive LED “eyes”, a smiling bumper and a “flying roof concept” that enhances aerodynamics, all of which lend it a charismatic yet accessible appearance inspired by iconic models like the original Golf.

Under the bonnet, a newly developed electric motor produces around 70 kW (95 PS), delivering a top speed of 130kph and a minimum range of 250km.

Alternative performance estimates indicate the motor may deliver up to 94bhp, with a top speed close to 81 mph and an estimated range of about 155 miles on a single charge, suggesting a battery capacity in the region of 40–50 kWh.

Practical features include a driver’s side charging flap and a tech-laden interior complete with a 15-inch touchscreen, physical climate controls, a sliding centre console and a host of high-quality, sustainably sourced materials.

Volkswagen’s rollout of the ID. EVERY1 is a critical element of its broader campaign to diversify its electric portfolio, which also includes the slightly more expensive ID.2all scheduled for launch in 2026.

This campaign comes at a time when the group is undergoing significant restructuring.

CEO Oliver Blume, who currently heads both Volkswagen and Porsche, is overseeing a series of cost-cutting and operational streamlining measures aimed at reinforcing the company’s competitiveness against emerging low-cost rivals, especially from China.

With a clear three-phase strategy established in late 2024 to expand the model range and secure technological leadership by 2030, the ID. EVERY1 represents Volkswagen’s vision of providing affordable, future-ready mobility “from Europe for Europe” while reinforcing its position as a global volume manufacturer.

Still, the timing of the ID. EVERY1’s release has analysts wondering whether Volkswagen’s initiative might be overshadowed by competitors, particularly Chinese EV manufacturers that are rapidly expanding their presence in the affordable EV segment.

This raises doubts about whether Volkswagen’s efforts might be “too little, too late” to capture significant market share in the entry-level EV market.
