BYD marked a milestone by rolling out its 10-millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), the Denza Z9, during its 30th anniversary celebrations at its Shenzhen plant.
The Z9, available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or fully electric vehicle, debuted at the Guangzhou Auto Show from Nov 15 to 24 and will begin customer deliveries next month.
The PHEV version of the Z9 is priced at 334,800 yuan (RM208,000) and features a 2.0T engine paired with three motors, generating a combined 392 kW. It includes a 38.5 kWh battery offering a 201 km electric range (CLTC).
The fully electric variant, priced at 354,800 yuan (RM220,000), is equipped with a 100 kWh battery delivering a range of 630 km and powered by three motors producing up to 710 kW.
The landmark vehicle was presented to Feng Ji, CEO of Game Science and creator of the popular game Black Myth: Wukong.
BYD is the first automaker globally to achieve the 10-million NEV milestone, with the first 5 million vehicles taking 15 years and the next 5 million completed in just 15 months—a reflection of its rapid growth in new energy technology.
BYD chairman and president Wang Chuanfu attributed the company’s success to its engineering-driven culture and a focus on innovation. Starting as a small startup with 20 employees, BYD has grown into a multinational powerhouse with nearly one million staff.
BYD plans to invest 100 billion yuan (RM62bil) into intelligent automotive technologies, integrating artificial intelligence to maintain its technological edge and enhance sustainability. This aligns with the “BYD Basic Guidelines”, a strategic framework for the company’s future.
The company’s journey was chronicled in The Soul of Engineers, a book by journalist Qin Shuo, highlighting BYD’s unique culture and commitment to innovation.
