Supercar owners in South Australia will have to jump through an extra hoop to be able to drive their high-powered cars on the road.
Come Dec 1, they have to get a special driving licence to do so.
The Australian state has mandated that they need to attend a special online course to qualify for the “U-class” licence.
The course last less than an hour hour, and candidates have to take a knowledge test before they can get the licence. They are not required to take a practical test.
The A$61 (RM193) course covers the risks associated with driving this type of car, as well as the safety features with which they are usually equipped. The licence is a A$20 (RM64) charge.
New state laws require a special licence for vehicles exceeding 370bhp per tonne. Offenders face fines up to A$2,500 (RM7,895) or imprisonment for repeat offences.
Disabling safety systems like ABS, AEB, ESC, or traction control can result in fines up to A$5,000 (RM15,790).
These measures, affecting a small number of wealthy Lamborghini and Ferrari owners, aim to increase driver awareness of the risks associated with high-powered vehicles, following a fatal accident in 2019.
