The all-electric Volvo EX90 has made headlines by introducing the world’s first battery passport.
This innovation, offered by Circulor, reveals upfront the battery’s raw materials, components, recycled content, and carbon emissions.
This development marks a big step forward in supply chain transparency. Through the Volvo Cars app and a QR code on the door frame, drivers can access detailed information about their vehicle’s battery. This includes:
1. Material Traceability: Track the origin and production journey of critical raw materials like cobalt, nickel, graphite, and lithium.
2. Embedded Carbon Footprint: Understand the carbon impact of the entire battery pack.
3. Recycled Content: Know the percentage of recycled materials used in the battery.
The EX90s with battery passports are now being delivered in the EU and the US.
This milestone is the result of years of collaboration between Volvo Cars and Circulor, starting in 2019. With over 145 battery value chain suppliers on Circulor’s platform, this technology sets a new standard for the automotive industry.
This development comes at a crucial time. The EU Battery Regulation mandates that all batteries have digital passports by February 2027 to ensure sustainable and responsible sourcing. Similar global policies like the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and the US Clean Vehicle Tax Credit also demand proof of sustainable practices.
