For car buyers these days, it pays to wait months or even over a year. That’s when the ongoing price war among automakers will toss up better deals.

Such is the case with the latest development with MG cars, where SAIC Motor Malaysia is throwing prices in a bid to stay competitive.

It has cut prices by RM8,000 for all MGS5 EV versions, aiming to widen access to electric mobility and shore up its position in a fast-moving market.

Effective immediately, the MGS5 EV starts at RM107,900 for the COM, RM117,900 for the COM Long Range, and RM127,900 for the LUX Long Range.

All variants use a rear-wheel-drive set-up rated at 170PS/168hp and 250Nm.

The COM offers a choice of 49kWh or 62kWh batteries with WLTP ranges of up to 340km and 430km respectively, while the LUX is paired with the 62 kWh pack as standard.

AC charging of 7kW is included across the range. The LUX adds DC fast charging up to 150kW, with a stated 10–80% in 26 minutes.

Specification remains a selling point.

The LUX brings 18-inch alloys, panoramic sunroof, leather-fabric seats with perforated MG logos, power driver’s seat, heated leather steering wheel, wireless charging pad, six speakers, a powered tailgate, and a 360-degree camera.

Styling cues include LED headlamps with ‘Racing Flag’ DRLs and Arch Taillights. Cabin tech features V2L, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.8-inch infotainment screen with voice command, a 10.25-inch digital cluster, and MG iSMART. Luggage space is quoted at up to 1,441 litres including the underfloor compartment.

MG said an ultra-thin Horizontal Battery Layout helps free up cabin room while lowering the centre of gravity. An adaptive pressure control system is claimed to reduce battery cell expansion to aid safety and longevity.

The price move is paired with an Ultimate Ownership Package offering savings of up to RM10,000, including a complimentary 7 kW wallbox or charging credits. Buyers can also opt for the MG Ultimate Financing Package via authorised dealers.

“This price revision reflects our commitment to make EV ownership more attainable for Malaysians as we prepare for the next phase of MG’s localisation strategy,” said SAIC Motor Malaysia managing director Emory QiFeng.

“With local assembly plans already in motion, we are ensuring that our customers benefit from greater value and flexibility while we expand MG’s presence in Malaysia.”
