The London borough of Camden will install over 570 state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) chargers, provided by Scottish startup Trojan Energy.

These chargers are designed to sit flush with the pavement, ensuring busy streets remain clear and accessible, even when the chargers are not in use.

For residents without private driveways, these new chargers offer a convenient solution to powering up their EVs right on the street.

The project, backed by government funding from the On-street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS), follows a successful trial in 2022.

The new installation will not only support individual EV owners but also benefit car-sharing schemes, encouraging more sustainable travel and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

Trojan Energy’s design connects each charger to an underground network of cables and central cabinets located up to 100 metres away.

The chargers are grouped together in clusters, greatly increasing the chances that drivers will find an available spot without needing designated parking bays.

Users will have to bring an adaptor or lance to connect their vehicle, making the process both straightforward and efficient.

With an initial rollout of 70 chargers scheduled for July 2025 and the remaining units set to be completed by 2026.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Camden Council to modernise its transport infrastructure, reduce emissions, and enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Camden is a vibrant part of London, famed for its lively markets and cultural scene.
