Tesla has made a deal with the Malaysian government in 2023 to install more EV chargers to contribute to the growing charging network in the country.

In its latest announcement this month, it said four V4 Superchargers and one 11kW Destination Charger are now available for use at The Gardens Mall in Kuala Lumpur.

The V4 Superchargers, located on Level P1, Zone B of the mall’s car park, offer peak charging rates of up to 250kW per vehicle, enabling Tesla Model 3 and Model Y owners to add around 282km of range in 15 minutes.

Charging costs are set at RM1.13 per kWh, with idle fees reaching up to RM4.00 per minute when stations are fully occupied. Destination Chargers are free for Tesla owners until further notice.

Malaysia now hosts 14 Supercharging stations with a total of 64 Superchargers, alongside 15 Destination Charging stations comprising 70 chargers. Tesla plans to further expand its charging network across the country.

The first V4 Superchargers in the region were installed at IOI City Mall, Putrajaya, and IOI Mall, Puchong, Selangor, in May 2024, which makes Malaysia the first country in Southeast Asia to have these advanced charging units. It had also set up four V4 Superchargers in Johor’s Skudai R&R (south-bound) last December .

Tesla’s V4 Superchargers introduce several advancements over the previous V3 version in terms of charging capacity, accessibility and future-proofing.

While V3 Superchargers offer charging speeds up to 250kW, V4 Superchargers have been upgraded to deliver up to 325 kW in North America, which is a 30% increase in charging speed.

V4 Superchargers feature a taller design and longer cables, facilitating easier access for various electric vehicles (EVs), including non-Tesla models (to come sometime this year).

V4 Superchargers are also built to support higher voltage architectures, accommodating future EV models with 800-volt systems, such as the Tesla Cybertruck and Semi. This ensures compatibility with upcoming vehicles requiring higher power delivery.
