BMW XM future in doubt as global sales fall

BMW XM sales have fallen sharply in 2026, just as a new report raises fresh doubts over whether the plug-in hybrid flagship has a future beyond its current generation.

Automotive News reported that the XM is among the models being scrutinised as BMW reviews its product range. BMW has not confirmed plans to discontinue the SUV.

Official sales figures nevertheless show the XM struggling for volume.

BMW delivered 7,608 XMs worldwide in 2025, down 2.6% from 7,813 a year earlier. That put it below the Z4 roadster, which recorded 9,744 deliveries, making the XM BMW’s lowest-volume current model line for the year.

The decline steepened during the first half of 2026. BMW sold 2,816 XMs, down 22.4% from 3,627 over the same period in 2025.

China is one of the key markets. BMW had originally expected the country to account for roughly 23% of XM demand, behind the US at 26%. Sales have not developed at the level initially expected.

Launched in 2022, the XM was only the second standalone model from BMW M after the M1. Unlike that lightweight sports car, however, the XM arrived as a large luxury SUV built around an electrified V8 drivetrain.

The range is now topped by the XM Label, which combines a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor for 550 kW (748 hp). BMW updated the V8 for 2026, including the adoption of the Miller combustion process to meet forthcoming emissions requirements.

For now, BMW has not announced when production of the current model will end or confirmed whether a replacement will follow. Separate reporting has also indicated that a second-generation XM has not been completely ruled out.

That leaves the XM in an unusual position: still BMW M’s most powerful production model, but also one of BMW’s slowest sellers at a time when the company is examining its wider model portfolio.

M1 and XM.
