MG has started production of the new MG 07 in China, with the first mass-production car rolling off the line at SAIC Passenger Vehicle’s Zhengzhou plant on July 2, according to Autohome, one of China’s largest automotive news, reviews and car-shopping portals.

The same factory also marked its three-millionth vehicle, with Autohome reporting that the plant took less than 23 months to add its latest one million units.

The MG 4X, another new model from the Zhengzhou base, has also completed its production ramp-up and is being prepared for wider deliveries.

The MG 07 is built on SAIC’s latest new-energy vehicle platform and is aimed at the 150,000 to 200,000 yuan (RM90,000-RM120,000) segment in China. MG is aiming it at younger buyers who want something with a bit more shape than the usual family sedan.

Size-wise, it is a mid-size car. The MG 07 measures 4,886 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,478 mm tall, with a 2,825 mm wheelbase.

The design follows the current China-market fashion for low, wide fastbacks, with a hatchback-style rear and a more planted stance than a conventional three-box sedan.

The car comes with driver-assistance. The first batch of MG 07 cars will be fitted with the Momenta R7 world model, paired with lidar.

Autohome said the system supports urban NOA, or navigation-assisted driving in city conditions.

The MG 07 will be offered as both a pure electric model and a plug-in hybrid. The EV version uses a drive motor produced by Shanghai Automotive Transmission.

As reported by Autohome, the electric MG 07 carries CLTC range claims of 650km and 610km, depending on variant. The plug-in hybrid is listed with a 185km WLTC electric-only range. The report did not explain why it did not cite the CLTC range for the plug-in hybrid as well.

The plug-in hybrid uses SAIC’s 1.5-litre engine, rated at 82kW, paired with an electric motor producing up to 152kW.

The MG 07’s design may be one of its bigger talking points, but not entirely for the reason MG would want.

CarNewsChina reported that MG general manager Chen Cui cut short a livestream after viewers compared the car’s low-slung fastback shape with the Porsche Taycan and Xiaomi SU7.

MG has pushed back by pointing to the 1962 MGB GT as design inspiration, but the backlash makes one thing clear: Chinese sedans are now being judged on design identity as much as range, power and tech.
