FAW Hongqi has settled on G919 as the production name for its first off-road vehicle, posting the announcement to its official Weibo account on June 6.

The model spent its development life under the internal code P567 and had its first public showing at the Beijing auto show in April.

Hongqi broke down the naming logic: G ties the vehicle to the brand’s identity as China’s state car marque; the repeated 9 signals flagship tier and a long-service commitment; 1 stands for top-grade capability.

Powertrain and performance figures have not been officially confirmed by Hongqi.

CarNewsChina, which has tracked the model since prototype stage, reported a range-extended electric setup running four motors — one per wheel — fed by a 2.0-litre turbocharged generator.

The outlet cited combined output of 620 kW (843 PS) and 1,320 Nm, a claimed 0–100 kph sprint of 4.5 seconds, 280 km of pure-electric running on the CLTC standard, and 1,350 km of total range.

The chassis is body-on-frame — a deliberate choice over monocoque construction for serious off-road duty.

CarNewsChina reported locking differentials at the front, centre and rear axles, along with air suspension.

Visually the vehicle wears the upright, squared-off proportions now conventional in the segment, with a roof rack, auxiliary lighting, recovery gear and all-terrain rubber. A lidar unit sits on the roof, suggesting the G919 will carry a substantive driver assistance suite.

A second-half 2026 market entry in China is the current target. Domestic rivals already holding ground in the electrified off-road space include GWM’s Tank range, BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand and BYD’s ultra-premium Yangwang.

For Malaysian car buyers, Hongqi may soon be a more familiar name, even if ownership is likely to remain a fairly exclusive exercise.

A Hongqi Malaysia website recently surfaced showing the E-HS9 electric SUV and H9 executive sedan, although the site itself said it is an independent informational resource and not officially linked to FAW, Hongqi or Quill Group.

Quill has signed a memorandum of understanding with China FAW Group to bring Hongqi into Malaysia, with importation, distribution and local assembly expected to be handled by Quill. A local launch has been targeted around mid-2026.

The G919 is a left-hand-drive-first product and is not expected to feature in early Malaysian plans, though Hongqi has indicated right-hand-drive SUVs for Southeast Asia are in development.
