Genting Malaysia Berhad will introduce a private road charge for vehicles using Jalan Genting Highlands to help fund the cost of maintaining the busy mountain route.
The company said in a statement that the “Caj Jalan Persendirian” would start at a date to be announced, with details to be released once the structure is finalised.
The 24km stretch, built and funded by Genting Malaysia since the 1960s, is a private road on private land.
It provides the main access to Resorts World Genting and also serves other mountainside destinations, making it a vital link for workers, businesses, tourists and day-trippers heading to the highlands.
Genting Malaysia said heavy and growing traffic had put immense strain on the road surface and surrounding slopes, requiring constant upkeep to keep motorists safe.
It added that the new charge was based on a “user pays” principle and was the most sustainable way to cover the escalating cost of repairs, maintenance and unforeseen incidents such as landslips.
The company said it takes responsibility for both road and slope safety seriously, noting the challenges and hazards of working in steep, mountainous terrain. Specialist works and continuous monitoring are needed to ensure the stability of the slopes and the integrity of the carriageway.
To support this, Genting Malaysia said it has to station teams at mid-hill and hilltop locations on standby around the clock, including trained emergency response personnel who can be deployed quickly in the event of accidents or other mishaps.
Genting Malaysia said Jalan Genting Highlands had been crucial in catalysing tourism in the area, creating jobs, supporting local enterprises and contributing to the Pahang and national economies.
