Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) today launched the sixth-generation Nissan Serena e-Power (C28) in Malaysia as a locally assembled (CKD) seven-seat MPV. The series hybrid is sold in five variants from RM154,800 to RM179,800 (on-the-road, without insurance, Peninsular Malaysia).
The line that will travel farthest is the claimed “up to 1,000km” range. Nissan tie that figure to an NEDC fuel-consumption claim of 18.5km/l and a 52-litre tank.
That is not EV range, and it is not a guarantee. It is a best-case, lab-cycle projection for a petrol-powered generator feeding a small battery. In the real world, speed, load, traffic and terrain will do what they always do to ambitious range claims.
Power comes from Nissan’s second-generation e-Power setup: a 1.4-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine acts only as a generator, while the front wheels are driven by an electric motor rated at 163PS (120kW) and 315Nm.
The lithium-ion battery is 1.77kWh, which tells you the priority is short-buffer efficiency rather than long electric running.
Equipment and sizing shift by variant. The Highway Star body brings the longer and wider footprint (4,765mm long, 1,715mm wide) versus the lower trims’ 4,690mm/1,695mm figures, and kerb weight also rises (1,799kg vs 1,784kg).
Inside, Serena sticks to a 2+2+3 layout with captain seats and a “walk-through” cabin idea, plus a long list of storage and seat configurations.
On tech, ProPilot and the fuller ADAS stack sit with Highway Star and above, while the entry variants are more basic.
ETCM backs the Serena with a five-year/100,000km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/160,000km e-Power component warranty;
As is typical of launches nowadays, there are sweeteners to be had. ETCM is throwing in an early-bird RM5,000 rebate and an accessories pack valued at RM8,000.
