Great Wall Motor’s Ora brand is back in the spotlight in China, launching the new Ora 5 compact electric SUV today after more than two years without an all-new model.
CarNewsChina reported the Ora 5 starts at 99,800 yuan (RM58,000) with no limited-time discounts applied.
CnEVPost, however, said GWM is offering an 8,000 yuan limited-time discount for orders placed by Dec 31, which effectively pulls the starting price down to 91,800 yuan (about RM54,000).
There are five variants, topping out at 133,800 yuan (RM78,000).
The upper trims add LiDAR hardware, indicating GWM is not treating the Ora 5 as a bare-bones budget play.
The Ora 5 sits in the compact SUV sweet spot. It measures 4,471mm long with a 2,720mm wheelbase, and is listed at 1,833mm wide, with some filings also citing 1,844mm. Height is 1,641mm. It is an urban-friendly footprint on paper, but it is not a tiny runabout, being bigger than the Ora Good Cat.
Power comes from a single electric motor rated at 150kW (201hp). Two LFP battery options are on offer, both supplied by Svolt Energy, which is linked to GWM. The 45.3kWh pack is rated at 480km on China’s CLTC cycle, while the 58.3kWh version is rated at 580km CLTC.
Inside, GWM goes big on screens: a 15.6-inch central touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system runs Coffee OS 3, and the shifter moves to the steering column.
The launch also signals a broader change in direction.
Ora’s reboot includes plans to sell hybrids, plug-in hybrids and petrol models alongside battery EVs. If that roadmap holds, the Ora 5 is effectively the opening act, and it lands in a segment where the BYD Yuan Plus, Geely Galaxy E5 and Leapmotor B10 play in.
Ora’s China sales have been under pressure this year, and the new model aims to bring buyers back with a simpler message: familiar styling, mainstream size, and aggressive pricing.
