New Zealand charger specialist Evnex has launched its most affordable smart home charger in Australia, the E2 Flex, aimed at EV owners who want to charge from the grid now and add solar later without changing hardware.
With roughly two-thirds of Australian households still without rooftop solar, the E2 Flex is pitched as a “start simple, upgrade later” option. It works as a standard grid-connected smart charger from day one and can be unlocked for solar integration later with a software upgrade, avoiding a costly hardware swap.
Introductory pricing is set at A$649 (RM1,733) for a limited time.
Evnex chief executive Ed Harvey said many owners just want “simple, safe, cost-effective home charging that gets them to a full battery fast”, and the E2 Flex is built to do that.
It charges up to four times faster than a normal wall socket, adds smart off-peak scheduling and, unusually for an entry-level unit, includes built-in home overload protection.
That safety feature monitors total household load and will automatically slow or pause charging if the system is at risk of being overloaded.
Chris Keenan, general manager of Smillie Electrical, noted that some buyers are drifting to cheaper boxes “without fully understanding the importance of key features such as home overload protection, choosing price over safety”.
The timing lines up neatly with the Federal Government’s Solar Sharer programme, due from July 2026, which will give eligible homes three hours of free daytime electricity in parts of NSW, South-East Queensland and South Australia.
Smart scheduling helps E2 Flex users cram as much charging as possible into that free window, even without rooftop solar.
Made in Christchurch and backed by a four-year residential warranty, the E2 Flex is compatible with all major EV brands and can be installed by any licensed electrician.
