BYD will unveil an all-electric kei-class prototype at the Japan Mobility Show next week, targeting a segment long dominated by domestic brands.
The world premiere is scheduled for press days on Oct 29–30 at Tokyo Big Sight, followed by public days from Oct 31 to Nov 9.
In an announcement on its Japanese site, BYD calls the model a “kei EV prototype” engineered to Japan’s compact-car rules and built to showcase its Blade Battery technology. No technical specifications were provided.
Kei cars are limited to 3.4 metres in length, 1.48 metres in width and 64hp, with tax and parking incentives keeping the category popular as urban runabouts and second cars.
The success of the Nissan Sakura shows there is demand for electric entries in this class.
A BYD teaser image points to a boxy profile with short overhangs and a long wheelbase to maximise cabin space — typical packaging for electric kei vehicles.
BYD has not confirmed interior or drivetrain details, and it has not indicated whether the car will be sold outside Japan.
The Tokyo debut continues BYD’s expansion in Japan. The company began local passenger-car sales in January 2023 and has added the Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal/Sealion to its line-up.
Further information is due at BYD Japan’s press conference at 14:30 on Oct 29.
