The Sealion 7 is the fifth BYD model to arrive on local shores and is the most premium of the entire model range in Malaysia to date.
Launched today in Kuala Lumpur, BYD is marketing it as a “performance SUV” unlike its more ordinary and lower-priced sibling the Atto 3.
It is basically the SUV version of the Seal sedan as both vehicles share the same platform and powertrain components, with the Sealion 7 offering a more spacious and practical five-seat SUV body style.
The Sealion 7 comes in two versions: Premium and Performance priced at RM184,500 (on-the-road without insurance) and RM200,500 respectively. The Premium has a single electric motor in the rear axle while the Performance has two motors in both axles for all-wheel drive capability.
With its sleek, ocean-inspired design and sloping roofline, the Sealion 7 is positioned as a strong contender in the premium EV segment, taking the fight to the Tesla Model Y.
The Premium variant offers 230kW/308hp of power and 380Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100kph in 6.7 seconds, and boasts a range of up to 567 km (NEDC) on a single charge.
For those seeking higher performance, the Performance variant delivers a powerful 390kW/523hp with 690Nm of torque, achieving 0-100kph in just 4.5 seconds and maintaining a range of 542km.
For both variants, lop off 20% of the outdated NEDC cycle and you will get a more realistic WLTP range of 450km for the Premium and 430km for the Performance.
The innovative Blade Battery technology is at the core of the Sealion 7, known for its durability, extended lifespan, and robust safety features. It has a capacity of 82.5kWh.
The SUV supports both AC and DC fast charging, with rates of up to 11kW for AC and 150 kW for DC, enabling rapid recharging for long-distance travel.
Note that the Sealion 7 sold in Europe offers 230kW DC charging as it is based on an improved platform.
Typical of high-end electric vehicles, the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function allows the Sealion 7 to power external devices, enhancing its versatility.
The Sealion 7 is highly specced in the safety department. It comes with nine airbags and a range of driver-assistance systems. Features like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, and Automatic Emergency Braking ensure comprehensive protection for drivers and passengers.
A 360-degree camera system, paired with front and rear parking sensors, offers enhanced visibility in tight spaces, making city driving stress-free.
For families, the Sealion 7 includes ISOFIX child seat anchorage points, emphasising its suitability as a family-friendly vehicle. The SUV also features a customisable 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen that integrates seamlessly with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Users can personalise the system’s wallpaper and set unique wake words, with the capability to handle multiple voice commands simultaneously.
Stepping inside the Sealion 7 reveals a luxurious interior designed for maximum comfort. The SUV is fitted with Nappa leather upholstery, complete with quilted stitching and heated, ventilated front sports seats. The panoramic sunroof, spanning 21 square metres, floods the cabin with natural light, enhancing the spacious feel. Fortunately, it comes with a sliding sunshade if the weather outside gets too bright or hot.
Adding to the in-car entertainment is a DYNAUDIO 12-speaker system, while a unique karaoke app turns the Sealion 7 into a mobile karaoke space.
The vehicle’s ambient lighting system, with 120 customisable colours, further elevates the in-cabin experience, creating a relaxing atmosphere for passengers.
To celebrate the launch, BYD distributor Sime Darby Motors has rolled out special promotions for customers who book the Sealion 7 by Nov 17. Early adopters will receive a complimentary home charger and RM800 worth of charging credits, provided they register their vehicle by Dec 31.
Additionally, BYD is offering a unique trade-up program for its existing 11,000 customers in Malaysia. This program allows loyal customers to upgrade to the Sealion 7 at preferential rates, reflecting BYD’s commitment to rewarding its customer base.
BYD Malaysia managing director Eagle Zhao said Malaysia is a key market for BYD. Underscoring that is the fact Malaysia is the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to debut this flagship model.
” We believe the BYD Sealion 7 will resonate strongly with the Malaysian market, offering an ideal option for drivers seeking thrilling performance without compromising comfort. This model sets a new standard for what an electric SUV can achieve.”
As the leading EV brand in Malaysia, BYD, in partnership with Sime Darby Motors, is expanding its footprint with a growing network of 27 showrooms and service centers across the country.
The company plans to exceed 30 outlets by the end of 2024, ensuring greater accessibility and support for customers.
This network expansion is complemented by BYD’s digital ecosystem, which includes an app for locating service centres, accessing real-time assistance, and unlocking vehicles remotely.
The BYD Sealion 7 is available in four colour options: Cosmos Black, Aurora White, Atlantis Grey, and Shark Grey.
The SUV will be on display from Nov 15 to 17 at The Exchange 106, offering potential customers a chance to experience it firsthand.
Zhao said Malaysians can expect more exciting launches in 2025.
Besides the Sealion 7, Seal and Atto 3, other BYD models offered in Malaysia are the Dolphin and M6.
