GWM Malaysia has completed the first local assembly unit of the Wey G9 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) MPV at EP Manufacturing Bhd’s (EPMB) plant in Melaka, marking a major step in the brand’s plan to turn Malaysia into its regional new energy vehicle hub.

The premium Chinese MPV, built as a New Energy Vehicle (NEV), is now open for booking nationwide ahead of its official launch in early 2026, with an expected price of under RM300,000. It was previously referred to as the Wey 80.

It is the first time a premium Chinese electrified MPV has been assembled locally, signalling growing confidence in Malaysia’s ability to handle higher-value electrified products.

The Wey G9 is built on a dedicated luxury New Energy platform developed through GWM’s global R&D network, then finished in Melaka with local quality controls.

For Malaysia, it will debut GWM’s Hybrid Intelligent 4WD (Hi4) system in the premium MPV segment, targeting both family and corporate buyers who want first-class comfort, intelligent safety features and smooth, efficient performance in a large people-mover package.

GWM Malaysia said the CKD programme at EPMB is central to its localisation strategy.

The company expects the partnership to support skilled job creation, develop local vendors and lay the groundwork for future export activities to neighbouring Asean markets.

Its management said the first G9 coming off the line was a “historic achievement” that blended global engineering with local craftsmanship and underpinned a more competitive long-term presence in Malaysia.

From a regional perspective, the G9 CKD project is also positioned as the opening move in a wider Asean roadmap.

With the first unit completed, GWM Malaysia will now ramp up preparations for the Wey G9’s market introduction in early 2026.

The next phases of the CKD programme would focus on increasing localisation content, building technical capabilities at the Melaka plant and sharpening Malaysia’s role within GWM’s wider NEV supply chain.

Further details on specifications and final pricing would be announced closer to launch.

The rollout ceremony today was witnessed by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, alongside senior representatives from EPMB and GWM Malaysia.
