GWM Malaysia has launched the Tank 300 HEV in Malaysia, giving its boxy off-road SUV a hybrid powertrain while keeping the ladder-frame hardware that defines the model.

The new variant is priced at RM259,800, (on-the-road without insurance). It is now available at selected GWM dealerships nationwide.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 245 PS and 380 Nm, paired with an electric motor rated at 106 PS and 268 Nm. Total system output is 255 kW (346 PS) and 648 Nm, giving the HEV more punch than the regular petrol version while promising smoother low-speed response.

GWM is keen to stress that this is still a proper off-roader, not just a rugged-looking SUV. The Tank 300 HEV sits on a body-on-frame ladder chassis, with high-strength steel making up 99% of the frame.

It also gets full-time on-demand 4WD, 4L low-range gearing, multiple terrain modes, Tank Turn Assist and Crawl Control. Those are the important bits for buyers who actually intend to leave the tarmac, not just park outside a café looking adventurous.

The drive modes include Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud, Sand and 4L. Tank Turn Assist works by locking the inner rear wheel to help tighten the turning radius, while Crawl Control lets the vehicle maintain steady progress over rough ground without constant throttle input.

Inside, the HEV gets Nappa leather upholstery, a nine-speaker Infinity audio system and connected-car functions through GWM’s app. The app allows remote monitoring of doors, windows, tyres, vehicle location, fuel and battery status, while also supporting remote control for functions such as air-conditioning, seat ventilation and the sunroof. Auto Parking Assist is also included.

Safety kit includes a Level 2 driver assistance package, covering adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking with junction assist, lane keeping and centring, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert with braking, a 360-degree camera and hill descent control.

Colours for the Tank 300 HEV are Crystal Black, Pearl White and the HEV-exclusive Sand Beige.

The launch package includes five years of free maintenance, five years of free Level 2 vehicle telematics service, an eight-year/180,000km power battery warranty, and a six-year unlimited-mileage vehicle and HEV system warranty.

First private owners also get a lifetime warranty for the engine and transmission. Existing GWM owners are offered a RM3,000 loyalty rebate.

GWM Malaysia said the standard Tank 300 remains the more mechanical choice, while the HEV caters to buyers who want the same off-road base with more refinement and hybrid assistance.
