KGM Motors, the brand previously known as SsangYong, has launched a new Dual Tech Hybrid powertrain in the Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid, pitching it as a full-hybrid set-up that delivers an “almost EV-like” feel without sacrificing long-distance usability.
The system is developed with BYD and combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an e-DHT electrified hybrid transmission and two electric motors.
KGM described it as a series-parallel arrangement that can run as an EV at lower speeds, operate as a series hybrid with the engine generating electricity, or switch to parallel operation when road speed and load call for it.
KGM said the petrol engine uses Miller-cycle combustion for higher thermal efficiency and a variable-geometry turbocharger to sharpen response.
It also increases fuel injection pressure from 250 bar to 350 bar, alongside cylinder-block coating changes aimed at durability under frequent hybrid stop-start use. In this tune, the engine produces 149.6PS and 220Nm, and often works primarily as a generator rather than driving the wheels directly.
At the hybrid system level, KGM said it uses Korea’s first P1 + P3 dual-motor architecture, derived from BYD plug-in hybrid know-how and adapted for full-hybrid use.
The P3 drive motor is rated at 130kW and delivers up to 177 PS and 300Nm, mounted close to the driveshaft to improve throttle response.
KGM said electric-only driving is possible up to 100kph, and the system can cycle through nine operating modes automatically. Drivers also get three levels of regenerative braking, plus a smart function that adjusts regen based on the distance to traffic ahead.
In the line-up, the Torres Hybrid forms the baseline specification, while the Actyon Hybrid adds equipment including a 360-degree camera, premium suede interior, noise-cancelling tyres, a hexagon steering wheel and a kick-operated powered tailgate.
