GM highlights scenic EV charging stops for US road trips

General Motors (GM) is putting a more relaxed spin on electric road trips, with a list of US charging stops where drivers can do more than plug in and watch the battery percentage climb.

Public DC fast charging is spreading across North America, and that changes how an EV road trip feels. For GM EV drivers, the company said access now covers more than 250,000 public chargers across the US and Canada.

GM also said its work with Pilot Flying J, EVgo, ChargePoint and IONNA has added more than 4,533 charging stalls at 844 sites in key cities and along major highway routes. The point is not just more chargers. It is better-placed chargers, especially along routes where drivers need food, toilets, a walk or something worth seeing nearby.

Here are some of the stops GM picked out.

Electrify America: Georgetown, Washington, DC
This one is for drivers who want a short city walk while the car charges. Georgetown has cobblestone streets, historic buildings and the Potomac River nearby, so it is a more pleasant stop than the usual anonymous car park.

EVgo: Sacramento, California
GM’s Sacramento pick is less scenic, more quirky. The charger sits near a mix of shops, including anime and paintball outlets, plus an art studio. It is the sort of place where a charging break can turn into a quick wander.

IONNA Rechargery: Apex, North Carolina
The Apex station is close to a small downtown area, a dog park and a skate park. With ultrafast DC charging, drivers may not have much time to do everything, but at least there are useful options within walking distance.

Electrify America: Moab, Utah
Moab is already a big name for hikers and off-roaders because of Arches National Park. GM highlights DC fast chargers near trailheads, a boat launch and camping areas, making this one of the more scenic stops on the list.

Pilot Travel Center: Chemult, Oregon
This stop is part of GM Energy’s collaboration with Pilot Company and EVgo. The Chemult site is near Crater Lake and hiking areas, which makes it a practical highway stop with a stronger outdoor angle.

EVgo: East St Louis, Illinois
This charger gives drivers a view across the Mississippi River towards the Gateway Arch in St Louis, Missouri. It is a classic American road-trip backdrop, just from the Illinois side.

IONNA at Wawa: Daytona Beach, Florida
This one is aimed squarely at motorsports fans. The IONNA fast charger sits at a Wawa across from Daytona International Speedway. Drivers can visit the Motorsports Hall of Fame or take a tour of the famous racing venue.

ChargePoint: Austin, Texas
The ChargePoint location on Electric Drive is close to parks, walking and cycling routes, downtown Austin and Congress Avenue Bridge, which is known for its large urban bat colony.

ChargePoint: Jackson, Wyoming
Jackson is useful for EV drivers heading towards Grand Teton or Yellowstone National Parks. The charger is close to the ski slopes, while the town also has a rodeo during summer.

EVgo: Portland, Maine
GM’s Portland pick puts drivers near museums, coffee shops and lobster-roll stops. It is a neat example of a charger placed in a city where a short stop can still feel worthwhile.

Of course, not every EV charger area has become a destination. Plenty still sit in dull car parks. But GM’s list shows where the better sites are heading: faster chargers, useful amenities and enough nearby interest to make a stop feel less like waiting.
