Hyundai has pulled the covers off its Crater Concept, a compact off-road electric SUV aimed at adventure seekers, at AutoMobility LA 2025 in Los Angeles.
The Crater Concept is a design study rather than a showroom model, but it gives a clear look at where Hyundai wants to take its XRT rugged line-up.
Conceived at the Hyundai America Technical Center in Irvine, California, it draws on “extreme environments” for inspiration and sits in the same off-road family as the Ioniq 5 XRT, Santa Cruz XRT and Palisade XRT Pro.
“Crater began with a question: ‘What does freedom look like?’ This vehicle stands as our answer,” said Hyundai executive vice president and head of Hyundai and Genesis global design SangYup Lee.
“It is a vision shaped by our unending drive to explore — to inspire our customers to explore deeper and embrace the impact of adventure.”
On the outside, Hyundai talks about an “Art of Steel” design language, turning the strength of steel into smooth surfaces and sharp lines.
Short overhangs and steep approach and departure angles give it a purposeful stance, backed up by 18-inch hexagon-inspired wheels wrapped in chunky 33-inch off-road tyres, a full-width skid plate, roof platform and limb risers to fend off branches.
The cabin is aimed at tech-savvy outdoor types who want something tough but welcoming. Soft, durable materials wrap angular shapes, with a full-width head-up display, bring-your-own-device interface and a crash pad that glows softly through tiny perforations.
A visible roll cage frames the interior, with built-in grab handles, while deeply bolstered seats and four-point belts hint at serious trail work.
Off-road controls are grouped on a tactile rotary controller, with settings for snow, sand and mud, plus locking differentials, downhill brake control, trailer brake control, a compass and an altimeter.
Finishing touches give the concept some humour and practicality: a recovery hook that doubles as a bottle opener, side-mirror cameras that can be removed and used as torches or action cams, and a character called “Crater MAN” hidden in small details around the vehicle.
The Crater Concept would remain on display through the AutoMobility LA media days and the Los Angeles Auto Show public days, shown alongside the new 2026 Palisade, Ioniq 5 and the high-performance Ioniq 6 N.
