Xiaomi has opened its first electric vehicle research and design centre outside China, choosing Munich as the European base for its growing car ambitions and AI-linked “Human × Car × Home” vision.
The Xiaomi EV Europe Research and Development and Design Center will focus on performance projects, electric powertrain technologies, intelligent driving and user-focused design as the company prepares to bring its SU7 and YU7-based line-up to Europe from 2027.
Munich was picked for its deep pool of automotive engineers and designers.
Xiaomi said the new hub would play a key role in tuning vehicle dynamics, safety and quality to meet European expectations, while feeding ideas back into its global EV programmes in China.
Engineers, designers and researchers in Germany will work closely with teams in Beijing and other centres on areas such as autonomous driving, EV platforms and next-generation in-car experiences.
The centre is also expected to partner with European universities and industry players on smart mobility, charging infrastructure and responsible use of AI in vehicles.
Xiaomi described the Sept 25 launch as a milestone in its shift from pure consumer electronics to a broader mobility and smart-home player, following strong domestic demand for the SU7 and YU7.
