Continental has introduced a groundbreaking in-car audio solution with its Ac2ated Sound display, the first technology of its kind to integrate speaker functionality directly into the display unit.
Using hidden actuators behind the screen, the system generates vibrations in the glass to produce high-quality sound, effectively turning the display into a sound source.
This innovation eliminates the need for traditional speakers, significantly reducing weight and saving space within the vehicle cabin.
By combining audio and visual output in one integrated component, Continental enhances both design flexibility and user experience.
The display surface, thanks to its structural properties, serves as an ideal resonating chamber, delivering optimal acoustic performance based on internal damping and material stiffness.
According to Pavel Prouza, head of the User Experience business area at Continental, the new system capitalises on the company’s expertise as a systems integrator to deliver immersive sound without compromising display quality.
One key benefit of Ac2ated Sound is its contribution to intuitive driver interaction. The technology supports “acoustic localisation,” where sound emitted directly from the display aligns with the user’s visual focus, naturally drawing attention to relevant information. This improves engagement and situational awareness, enhancing safety and convenience.
The actuators behind the display are compact—just a few centimetres in size — and allow for simplified assembly by removing the need for separate speaker components.
In addition to display integration, Ac2ated Sound can be extended to other flat vehicle surfaces, including door trims, headrests, A-pillars, and roof linings. This allows the entire car interior to function as a distributed audio system using existing surfaces.
