Geely launched the Galaxy E5 electric SUV on Aug 3 in Guiyang, some 1,600km west of its base in Hangzhou.

The Galaxy sub-brand was introduced in February 2023, to offer mainstream plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles.

Targeted at global consumers, the E5 features left- and right-hand drive versions to meet the regulatory requirements of 89 countries.

It is equipped with a highly efficient intelligent electric drive, CTB (cell-to-body) battery integration, and the innovative “Short Blade Battery” for superior safety and durability.

The E5’s dimensions — 4,615 mm in length, 1,901 mm in width, and a 2,750 mm wheelbase — provide a spacious interior, offering class-leading storage and comfort. The vehicle’s design aims to outperform competitors, particularly BYD’s Atto 3, and push Geely’s international sales.

To be sold as the EX5 overseas, the SUV is expected to debut at the 2024 Automechanika Frankfurt in September. It will soon be introduced in Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Norway and other markets. Note that the E5 would not be sold in Malaysia as the Proton e.MAS 7, based on the E5, would be offered there.

Available in five versions, the E5 is priced competitively from RMB 112,800 to RMB 148,800 (USD 15,300 to 20,800). Customers who order the E5 before Oct 1 get a RMB 3,000 discount across all versions.

The vehicle is equipped with Meizu’s Flyme Auto infotainment system and features such as a floating central control screen, digital instrument panel, and optional premium features like massage seats and 16 speakers.

The cabin is enhanced by flexible seating options and the “Half More” storage concept, providing up to 50% more storage capacity than the industry average.

The SUV also incorporates Geely’s 11-in-1 intelligent drive system, offering a 0-100kph acceleration time of 6.9 seconds.

The E5 is available in two battery configurations: 49.52 kWh for a 440 km range and 60.22 kWh for a 530km range. Geely’s goal is to challenge rivals like BYD by offering superior performance and value for money.

Domestic demand has been strong with over 12,000 units sold in the first 20 days.

Buoyed by such strong sales, the E5 forms a crucial part of Geely’s larger strategy for global EV dominance, with plans to introduce more models in the Galaxy range, including four plug-in hybrids and three fully electric vehicles by 2025.
