BYD Sime Motors has partnered with the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) on a five-day programme to strengthen frontline readiness for electric-vehicle incidents.

The Electric Vehicle Operation, Safety & Fire Investigation course was held recently at the Fire and Rescue Academy Malaysia (Central Region) in Kuala Kubu Baru.

Developed by BYD Academy with BYD Malaysia, the training targeted fire investigation, operations and safety personnel, combining classroom briefings with practical drills.

Topics covered included EV architecture and high-voltage components, incident identification, battery emergency management, fire-ground safety protocols and personal protective equipment, suppression tactics, and post-incident investigation procedures.

The initiative was launched at BYD Academy in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, by the fire department’s deputy chief director (operations) Ahmad Izram Osman.

Sime Motors Southeast Asia managing director Jeffrey Gan was credited with driving the collaboration, while BYD Sime Motors managing director Adeline Lew represented the company at the ceremony.

“Safety is the cornerstone of sustainable mobility,” said Gan.

“We are proud to support this collaboration between BYD Sime Motors and Bomba Malaysia, ensuring our emergency responders are well-equipped to handle any given situations from EVs. This initiative reflects our commitment to building a safer, smarter future for all Malaysians.”

BYD Academy, the learning and development arm of BYD Sime Motors, said the course is intended to give first responders the confidence to manage battery fires and related hazards, and to standardise procedures across investigation and operations units.

The company added that embedding EV-specific know-how within the fire department would enhance safety for firefighters, road users and nearby communities as EV adoption rises nationwide.
