Flood-related insurance claims for electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia average RM8,400, around one-quarter of the RM34,000 recorded for petrol and diesel vehicles.

The figures were presented by the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) at its “Monsoon Readiness Media Roundtable” today, drawing on Insurance Services Malaysia data covering 2022 to June 2026.

PIAM chief executive officer Chua Kim Soon cautioned that the figures do not establish whether EVs are inherently more resistant to flood damage.

He said EV claims data remain limited, while differences in how and where vehicles are driven could influence the results.

Chua noted that EVs are frequently used as secondary vehicles and driven in urban areas. He also cited electrical protection features, including automatic high-voltage isolation, as possible contributors to lower claims.

Insurance coverage differs considerably between the two vehicle categories.

About 50% of EVs have additional flood protection, compared with just 13% of internal combustion engine vehicles.

These figures do not provide a like-for-like comparison of repair costs for vehicles subjected to similar flooding.

With the northeast monsoon under way, PIAM urged motorists to review their insurance policies and check whether flood damage is covered.

Standard comprehensive motor insurance does not automatically include flood protection. Motorists generally need to purchase an optional special perils extension.

Chua said additional protection could also be arranged during an existing policy period, without waiting for renewal.
