Jaecoo has given Malaysians their first proper look at an electric model from the brand, previewing the J5 EV ahead of its official launch.
The B-segment SUV is on display at the “Oh My Meow! Expo 2026”, running July 9-12 at Level 3 of the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur.
It’s an unusual venue for a car setting, but Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia says it’s the first car company in the country to partner with a cat-themed expo — a fitting choice, given the J5 EV is being pitched as a pet-friendly family SUV.
In place of the petrol J5’s engine, the J5 EV gets a front-mounted motor producing 155 kW (211PS) and 288 Nm.
Power comes from a 58.9kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate battery, good for a claimed WLTP range of up to 402km. DC fast charging takes the battery from 30% to 80% in 28 minutes, and vehicle-to-load support means the car can run external electrical devices, handy for camping trips or powering equipment on the go.
Standard kit runs deep for the segment: an active grille shutter, Level 2+ driver assistance spanning 19 functions, a 540-degree HD surround camera and a 13.2-inch 2K central display.
Jaecoo has also fitted an eight-speaker audio system, 50W wireless phone charging and dual-zone climate control.
Practicality hasn’t been overlooked either. There’s a 35-litre front boot, a 480-litre rear boot, and 35 separate storage spaces dotted around the cabin — useful for anyone hauling pet gear alongside the usual shopping and school bags.
Visually, the J5 EV sticks close to its petrol sibling’s silhouette, though the nose has been cleaned up and loses the conventional grille altogether, swapped for a smoother, more closed-off front end befitting the electric drivetrain underneath.
The petrol J5 is already on sale in Malaysia, priced at RM108,000.
Dimensions come in at 4,380mm long, 1,860mm wide and 1,650mm tall, with a 2,620mm wheelbase — squarely B-segment SUV proportions.
If Jaecoo prices the J5 EV above the petrol model and broadly against the MG S5 EV and Leapmotor B10, a CKD launch price in the RM120,000 to RM130,000 range would be plausible, but no official Malaysian pricing has been announced yet.
