A design patent for a BYD humanoid robot has surfaced in China, providing a closer look at the electric vehicle manufacturer’s robotics project.
China’s National Intellectual Property Administration published the patent on Oct 9, identifying BYD as the holder. It was granted on Oct 6 under publication number CN310247768S.
Named “Embodied Intelligent Robot”, the design showed a black-and-white machine with a rounded head, articulated limbs and jointed fingers.
The patent described potential applications in industrial work, education and service operations.
The design appeared similar to Xiao Di, a robot concept previewed by BYD in July, although the company has not confirmed that the patent depicted its final appearance.
BYD executive vice-president Stella Li said in June that she hoped eventually to deploy two or three robots at every dealership to greet customers, explain vehicle features and conduct demonstrations.
Fellow Chinese carmaker Chery is one step ahead of BYD and has already begun commercial deployment of humanoid robots.
Chery said its AiMOGA robot entered service at a Kuala Lumpur dealership in 2025, assisting with customer reception, vehicle presentations and test-drive bookings.
The company also plans applications in shopping malls, public services, homes and eldercare facilities.
BYD has yet to disclose the robot’s technical specifications or production plans.
The patent covers its appearance, with no details of its motors, battery, operating time or ability to function independently.
