Volkswagen has opened German pre-sales for the ID. Polo with its smaller 37kWh battery, cutting the electric hatchback’s starting price to €24,995 (RM117,000).

The entry-level Trend uses the 37kWh net-capacity lithium iron phosphate battery and offers up to 334km of WLTP range. Buyers can choose 85kW or 99kW front-wheel-drive versions, equivalent to 116PS and 135PS.

DC charging peaks at 90kW. Volkswagen says a 10% to 80% charge takes about 23 minutes, placing the car squarely around urban driving and regular commuting rather than long-distance touring.

Official combined energy consumption ranges from 13.3 to 14.8kWh/100km, depending on the version. Volkswagen is aiming the smaller-battery car at price-conscious buyers, although real running costs will depend on electricity tariffs, insurance and driving conditions.

The cheaper battery option arrives a few weeks after pre-sales began for the 52kWh ID. Polo. Volkswagen says the wider Electric Urban Car Family has collected more than 70,000 orders within several weeks, including 25,000 for the ID. Polo.

German prices for 37kWh Life and Style configurations start from €29,195 (RM136,700).

Even the Trend is not stripped bare. The equipment list also includes several driver-assistance and cabin features from the entry grade.

Standard equipment includes LED headlights with automatic main-beam control, a 10-inch digital instrument display, 13-inch infotainment touchscreen, automatic air conditioning and a leatherette multifunction steering wheel.

Its driver-assistance package includes Lane Assist with Emergency Assist and Side Assist.

The Life grade adds adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and front cross-traffic assistance.

It also gains wireless smartphone charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, folding mirrors and an adjustable boot floor.

Style sits at the top of the three-grade range. It brings IQ.Light LED matrix headlights, illuminated badges at both ends, three-dimensional LED tail lights, heated front seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and extended ambient lighting.

The lighting system can display navigation and charging information. Volkswagen has also extended it into the front doors, where it can warn occupants of approaching traffic before a door is opened.

Options include a 425-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 10 speakers and a subwoofer, a panoramic glass roof and 12-way electrically adjustable front seats. The seats offer pneumatic massage, while the driver’s side includes a memory function.
