GAC Motor has unveiled the M8 PHEV, marking the nation’s first flagship plug-in hybrid electric MPV.
Its preview at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 is a precursor to its official launch later this year.
The seven-seat model pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 68.8 kWh lithium-ion “magazine” battery, together producing 150 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque.
This hybrid powertrain delivers a combined driving range of up to 1,038 km on a single tank of fuel and full charge, ensuring suitability for both urban commutes and extended journeys. Charging flexibility is provided by up to 10 kW AC input — restoring the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in around six hours — and 78 kW DC fast-charging, which raises the state of charge from 30 per cent to 80 per cent in around 50 minutes.
Safety and refinement are emphasised in this MPV.
GAC’s patented 360° full-surround airbag system — including the world’s first rear windscreen airbag — works alongside a comprehensive suite of intelligent driver-assistance technologies to protect occupants.
The cabin has been designed for wellbeing and convenience, featuring configurable seating layouts, ample stowage and high-quality materials throughout.
WTC Automotive CEO Tan Keng Meng said early-bird bookings for the M8 PHEV are now open ahead of its launch later in 2025, with an estimated starting price from RM333,000.
To boost customer confidence, GAC offers a five-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, alongside an eight-year/150,000 km guarantee covering the battery, drive motor and electric control unit. Those reserving during the pre-sales period will receive two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance and a portable charging cable —representing a combined value of RM3 800.
GAC Motor and AION are expected to roll out a steady stream of models in future. Following the M8, attention will shift to the high-profile HYPTEC HT, the bold AION V electric SUV and the GS3 EMZOOM crossover — each designed to address different types of customers.
