This just in: Ford has named its coming affordable electric pickup the Fathom, with US prices starting at US$28,350 (about RM116,000) before destination charges.

Add the US$1,595 delivery fee and the entry model costs US$29,945 (RM123,000). That keeps Ford’s first Universal Electric Vehicle Platform model below the US$30,000 mark it set last year.

The quoted price applies to a standard-range battery. Ford has not published the final driving range, battery capacity, charging figures or complete dimensions.

Ford has already tried a battery-electric pickup with the F-150 Lightning, a full-size model that entered production in 2022. The company later ended the electric version amid weak demand and mounting losses across its EV business, replacing it with plans for an extended-range model. Fathom takes a different route: it is a smaller, midsize pickup built around a lower-cost EV platform that Ford said should be easier to produce profitably.

The five-seat cabin is claimed to offer more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4. There is also a front luggage compartment and an open load bed. A digital key and bidirectional power supply will be included.

Every Fathom will carry the hardware needed for Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system. Ford has not said whether activation is included in the base price. The cabin will use a large high-resolution touchscreen, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain available. Apple Maps will provide the built-in navigation and supply road data for the next-generation BlueCruise system.

Ford spent nine months choosing the name of the mid-size truck. It considered reviving Ranchero and other names from its back catalogue, but decided their existing associations did not suit the new truck.

“Fathom” originally described the span of two outstretched arms, later becoming a nautical measure of depth and a word meaning to understand something fully. Ford said that fitted a vehicle developed after years of studying a specific customer.

Production is scheduled to begin at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky in 2027. Pre-orders are due to open early that year, with initial customer deliveries planned for later in 2027.

Ford has not shown the production vehicle in full or announced when it will reveal the remaining specifications.
