Volkswagen has unveiled the production ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV that will sit alongside the ID. Polo in its smaller, lower-priced EV range.
Advance sales opened in Germany on July 15 for the 155kW Life and Style versions with a 52kWh battery. Prices start at €36,525 (RM170,400). The entry-level Trend, combining an 85kW motor with a 37kWh battery, is due later from €27,995 (RM130,600).
The five-seat SUV measures 4,153mm long, 1,794mm wide and 1,581mm tall, with a 2,601mm wheelbase. Its 475-litre boot holds 20 litres more than the petrol-powered T-Cross, while a 25-litre compartment beneath the bonnet provides space for charging cables.
The design uses a high bonnet, broad C-pillars and a contrasting roof section. Higher specifications add matrix LED headlights, three-dimensional LED tail-lights, illuminated light bars and lit Volkswagen badges at both ends.
Underneath is Volkswagen’s updated MEB+ electric-car platform, configured here with front-wheel drive. Three motor outputs are planned: 85kW, 99kW and 155kW.
Buyers will also have a choice of 37kWh and 52kWh net-capacity batteries, with the longest-range version rated for up to 427km under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure.
Both batteries support 11kW alternating-current charging. The smaller pack accepts up to 90kW at a direct-current charger and takes about 23 minutes to move from 10% to 80%.
The 52kWh battery raises peak charging power to 105kW, although the same charge takes about 24 minutes.
Inside, a 10.25-inch driver display sits beside a 12.9-inch touchscreen. The instrument panel includes a selectable Golf Mk1-style layout, replacing the old tachometer with a power-use gauge.
Volkswagen has also retained conventional buttons and fitted a rotary audio control with a metallic outer ring.
The options list includes 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with pneumatic massage, a 425-watt Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic roof and adaptive DCC suspension on the 155kW model.
The Life trim also brings dual-zone climate control and adaptive cruise control. Style adds heated seats, a heated steering wheel and keyless entry as standard equipment.
Connected Travel Assist can recognise a red traffic light and brake the car to a stop within the system’s limits. Remote parking, a 360-degree camera and one-pedal driving are also available.
A 3.6kW vehicle-to-load function is standard. Versions with the 52kWh battery can tow up to 1,200kg.
