Hyundai Motor Company has launched Initium, a new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) concept.

The debut took place at the “Clearly Committed” event at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang in Seoul.

Initium highlights Hyundai’s dedication to hydrogen technology, a journey that spans 27 years.

This concept SUV previews Hyundai’s next production FCEV, set to be released in early 2025. The design also introduces Hyundai’s new style, called “Art of Steel,” which represents a future driven by hydrogen.

The concept’s name, Initium, means “beginning” in Latin, symbolizing Hyundai’s pioneering role in hydrogen energy. Initium also marks the debut of Hyundai’s “Art of Steel” aesthetic, which emphasises strength, solidity, and a balanced, SUV-like design.

SangYup Lee, Hyundai’s design head, said the concept integrates the HTWO hydrogen brand identity with bold design cues, including a unique lighting signature and 21-inch wheels, blending urban appeal with outdoor utility.

Initium’s design is crafted for a dual-purpose lifestyle, combining robust, elegant lines with practical features like a rugged roof rack.

Its interior is spacious, optimized for family use with ample second-row legroom, reclining seats, and a wide body, enhancing accessibility. Hyundai has also fitted Initium with FCEV-specific technology, including a route planner that finds nearby hydrogen stations and displays real-time information on availability.

Technologically, Initium is designed to achieve a driving range of over 650km between refuelling, thanks to aerodynamic wheels and low rolling resistance tyres. Hyundai has also upgraded the hydrogen fuel cell stack and battery, delivering up to 150 kW output, ensuring efficient acceleration and high-speed stability.

Hyundai CEO Jaehoon Chang said the company is investing in hydrogen mobility for the long term.

Hyundai plans to showcase Initium at upcoming auto shows in Los Angeles and Guangzhou.

With Initium, Hyundai aims to address the needs of FCEV users, including seamless refuelling solutions, marking a strategic step in its goal to expand hydrogen’s role in sustainable transportation globally.
