EV Connection (EVC), in partnership with BMW, has introduced Malaysia’s first Mobile Charging Vehicle at the Malaysia Autoshow 2023, repurposing end-of-life EV batteries to create an “EV powerbank” on wheels.
The prototype, based on a Nissan Vanette donor vehicle, carries 16 BMW battery modules originally totalling 30kWh. They have an estimated state of health of 70 per cent and usable capacity of around 20 kWh.
Equipped with a rear-mounted 30 kW DC fast charger, the mobile unit can replenish roughly 100km of driving range in 30 minutes or deliver 40–50 km within 15 minutes.
Although the Vanette serves merely as a testbed, future versions may adopt alternative chassis to enhance flexibility and performance. This initiative forms part of BMW Group Malaysia’s second-life battery programme, which aims to redeploy retired battery packs to support the broader electrification ecosystem before final recycling.
