British parking operator YourParkingSpace.co.uk has launched the world’s first carbon neutral car park at Republic London, the company’s headquarters. This initiative marks a pioneering step in offsetting carbon emissions associated with parking.
The launch of the car park was held in collaboration with environmental consultants Circular Ecology.
The car park operates on 100% renewable energy and offsets emissions by calculating the average distance driven by motorists, as well as vehicle emissions data, to determine its total carbon footprint.
These emissions are neutralised through the use of Gold Standard carbon credits, ensuring high environmental integrity and support for sustainable development projects.
Beyond carbon offsets, the scheme delivers additional community benefits, including the provision of clean cookstoves, access to clean water, and renewable energy initiatives. Four trees are planted for every tonne of carbon offset, further enhancing its environmental impact.
YourParkingSpace.co.uk CEO Harrison Woods said the initiative was part of its role in fighting climate change and expressed hope that it would inspire similar efforts from governments and organisations.
Circular Ecology director Dr Craig Jones said carbon neutrality in the parking industry has immense untapped potential that could lead to broader social benefits.
May Molteno of Trilogy Real Estate LLP, owners of the premises, praised the collaboration, underscoring the importance of reducing emissions and investing in offset initiatives like tree planting and cleaner energy solutions.
