GWM Malaysia launches the locally assembled (CKD) WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV in a single variant, pitching it as a premium seven-seat MPV with plug-in hybrid muscle and EV-style charging.
The recommended retail price is set at RM269,800 on-the-road without insurance for Peninsular Malaysia (excluding Langkawi), while Sabah and Sarawak pricing is listed at RM273,650 (excluding Labuan).
At the heart of the WEY G9 is GWM’s Hi4 setup pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors and a 4-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).
Combined output is quoted at 442PS (325kW) and 642Nm, enough for a claimed 0–100kph time of 5.7 seconds and a 190kph top speed.
The MPV uses a 44.2kWh ternary lithium battery.
GWM quoted an electric-only range of 170km (NEDC), which worked out to about 145km (WLTP) on a straight 85% conversion, and a 1,000km+ (NEDC, equivalent to 850km WLTP) combined driving claim.
Charging support was listed at 6.6kW AC and up to 60kW DC, with 30–80% DC in 26 minutes and 15–100% AC in 6.5 hours. It also supported 3.3kW V2L to run external devices.
The WEY G9 measures 5,050mm long with a 3,085mm wheelbase and a 2+2+3 seating layout, and has a 5.9m minimum turning radius.
Inside, the sales pitch focuses on comfort features, including “zero gravity” second-row captain’s chairs, a large infotainment screen, and a built-in hot/cold refrigerator (0-50°C).
Launch offers included a free wallbox charger, five years’ free maintenance, five years’ telematics, a six-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, and eight years/180,000km coverage for the battery and key e-drive hardware.
GWM also laid out an ambitious production plan for the PHEV. It’s targeting around 5,000 units a year for the local market, matched by another 5,000 units annually for export. The carmaker added that the MPV’s current localisation rate stands at 40.05%. The Wey 9 is the second MPV from China with a plug-in hybrid powertrain after the GAC M8.
On a related note, veteran singer Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza was appointed WEY’s brand ambassador in Malaysia and became the first local owner of the MPV. She is also the owner of a Zeekr 7X, as announced last month.
