Toyota plans to build the next-generation Corolla in China from 2028, including a fully electric version, according to Nikkei Asia.
Production is expected to take place through FAW Toyota, the Japanese carmaker’s joint venture with China’s FAW Group.
The new Corolla will reportedly offer petrol, hybrid and battery-electric powertrains, allowing Toyota to continue selling the model across markets with different levels of EV adoption.
Toyota gave an early glimpse of the next Corolla at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2025, where it unveiled a concept featuring a low nose, slim headlights and a radically different silhouette from today’s model.
The company also outlined plans to accommodate multiple powertrains, including battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, conventional hybrid and petrol options.
China is a crucial market for Toyota, which faces stiff competition from local manufacturers such as BYD and Geely.
Producing an electric Corolla locally would put Toyota in a better position to compete in a market where home-grown brands have made major gains.
Toyota has yet to confirm the reported 2028 production timetable or disclose specifications for the electric version.
Battery capacity, driving range, pricing and whether the China-built model will be exported remain undisclosed.
