SAIC Motor Malaysia will start assembling MG vehicles in the first half of 2026 with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) at its Melaka plant, producing battery-electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV) and internal-combustion (ICE) models under one roof to boost affordability, speed deliveries and deepen localisation.
The plant would also be the Asean production hub for MG, with cars assembled for regional distribution.
Managing director Emory Qi announced the plan at a stakeholder event attended by MARii chairman Datuk Dr Aminar Rashid and EPMB executive chairman Hamidon Abdullah.
In just over a year, SAIC Motor Malaysia has grown to 26 MG authorised dealerships nationwide, including three in Sarawak, with three more coming.
Its five-model range now includes the all-electric MGS5 EV, while the MG Cyberster has made Malaysia the brand’s best-performing market in Asia and Oceania for the roadster.
EPMB said MG would be the first EV assembled at Melaka and localisation would extend to battery pack assembly. SAIC Motor Malaysia added that all locally built vehicles would undergo stringent global-standard quality checks.
The company cited Malaysia’s strategic Asean location, established vendor base and long-standing Malaysia-China ties for the investment.
Beyond assembly, the programme is expected to create jobs, strengthen local suppliers and lay the base for future R&D activity.
